Robert Keenan
Professional UK-based magazine sub editor and writer.
Rob was one of the lucky few who knew what they wanted to do for a living from an early age. He was inspired by his grandmother to work with plants, and growing up in rural Devon allowed him to experiment with all manner of weird and wonderful plants throughout his childhood. Once through school and A-Levels he worked at a National Trust garden in south Devon for a year before spending three years studying for an HND in landscape and amenity horticulture at Writtle College. One of these years was spent working in the industry, for another National Trust garden, this time in Northern Ireland.
Fully expecting to work for the National Trust when he left Writtle in 1994, Rob took a chance and applied for a job on Amateur Gardening magazine - and his publishing career took off! He started as a sub, then tried life as a features editor before settling into the job of production editor (five years altogether).
Rob's other passion is cars, and those years spent learning the ins and outs of producing a magazine at Amateur Gardening allowed him to go for a position on Autocar, another weekly mag, where he worked as a sub and production editor for three years.
Five years ago he decided to go freelance, mainly as a sub editor but also as a writer, and has since worked on a huge variety of magazines, including, among many others:
